Rockford, IL (March 14, 2020) – A deadly apartment fire was reported just after 5:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. An apartment located near downtown Rockford at 722 North Second Street was ablaze with flames shooting out from the south side apartment.

When the Rockford Fire And Rescue arrived at the scene, they immediately went to work trying to put out the flames. When first responders went inside the building a man and a woman were found unconscious. They were quickly transported to the local hospital for treatment where they were eventually pronounced dead.

There was a pet reported in the apartment as well, and that pet was confirmed to have died.

People living on the north side of the apartment building were able to make it out safely.

Investigators have not confirmed the cause of the accident but have said they believe it was accidental. The investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing.
